75 Bed Ward, University Hospital Galway

The project involved a four storey ward block within the centre of the University Hospital Campus and was extremely complex in terms of the specific phasing requirements required to enable the Hospital to continue functioning fully throughout the entire construction period. A linear site bounded by existing Hospital Departments largely generated the design solution and the shallow plan format with bathrooms located between the single bedrooms proved very economic. A central ‘race track’ circulation pattern allowed the ancillary accommodation which doesn’t require daylight to be located in the centre of the plan. This also facilitated the emergence egress fire strategy.
