St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny

Project Stage: Planning

Our aim for the creation of a new extension at St Kieran’s College in Kilkenny is to develop a centre of learning that wraps comfortably and naturally around its site of protected existing buildings. The project is conceived as a three-story, red standing seam metal structure that sits upon a light grey solid base which is carried out through onto the Technology and SEN block to therefore represent a natural spatial quality due to its materiality and the importance it has in carefully flowing through the old and embracing a new yet respectful architecture. It does not shy away from being something contemporary, but it engages and protects its surroundings through details of proportion and form.

The importance of green in-between is seen through the use of courtyards. The intersection of old and new has allowed us to define teaching and learning spaces with a connection between the internal and the external context of the historic St Kieran’s campus.
